Live Monitoring San Francisco High Rise

What's the "invisible" damage due to earth quakes and how sound are these buildings today?

To monitor high rise building for deformation as result from any possible (external) influences in downtown San Francisco owners are now employing StabiAlert technology.

With this technology we can wireframe the deformation for easy to understand effects on the building.

On commissioning all data is recorded providing you with easy to access historical data and live data every few seconds.

The monitoring (and the data) can be used for:

  • Construction sites
  • Nearby construction activity
  • re-constructive goals
  • subsidence
  • Legal evidence
  • Safety
  • and many other ...

Below, the deformation model of a high rise building due to high wind speeds amplified a 1000 times. Quantification of deformation can be obtained via our StabiFrame tool.

The, by the sensors, recorded deformation due to the high wind speeds. The effects of these recordings on the building is shown above in the 4D* model.

All information about the graphs can be obtained at this page

High frequency data

High frequency data of a train passage.

A further extension of the StabiAlert technology is the recording of events at high frequency. All sensors are equipped with machine training algorithms capable or recognizing abnormalities. On detecting one, a complete set of high frequency data @ 100Hz and 400Hz is send to our servers where through our StabiVibe application you can access them.

Earthquake v. Wind load

Wind load graph and the sway of the (real size) model.

Below you can see the building sway sensor data on the left. Coinsidentally that day the sensors also picked up the Rayleigh (transversal surface) waves of the M 2.3 - 8km NNW of Pinnacles, CA earthquake.

The total building sway as result of the maximum wind load that day (red arrow and text) can be seen in the right hand image.

The total, by the model calculated swing, is between 26 and 30 millimeter.

Quake and Windload on the same day.
The sway's extremes due to the windload

Earthquake M 3.3 - 5km NE of Alamo, CA

The total building sway as result of the M 3.3 - 5km NE of Alamo, CA earthquake that day (red arrow and text) just short of 40 km from the epicentre, can be seen in the right hand image.

The total, by the model calculated swing, is between 19 and 29 millimeter.

Earthquake schaking the complete building.

Bij working with the StabiAlert system a very fast and simple comparison between floor induced deformation and building surface induced deformation is now possible. Two models are made: a wind model where the foundation is set to be "rigid" and a ground deformation based model that allows the floor level to flex.
